English edition

This time it's a book club.

The title and cover give a somewhat stiff impression, but the content is quite simple.

The point is, "Is that really true? The idea is to think logically about this issue.

I believe that this will be an opportunity for everyone to question the norm.

general description

Learn how to think about "causal inference," an essential education in the age of big data!

If you take a metabolic syndrome health checkup every year, you can detect and treat diseases at an early stage and live longer.
Few people would feel any discomfort when they are told this.

However, "getting health checkups" and "living longer" are just happening at the same time (it is just a correlation). You can live longer "because" you received medical checkups (cause and effect).
It may not be a fruitful relationship. In this case, a person who has never had a medical checkup before may not necessarily live longer even if he/she starts having one every year.
In fact, a great deal of research has already been done on this subject, suggesting that getting people to take medical checkups does not reduce mortality rates.

This book will help you correctly see if the two things are really "cause and effect," and you will not be deceived by the "plausible but false and unfounded theories" around you. This book explains the concept of causal inference in a thorough and easy-to-understand manner without using any mathematical formulas.

Even if it is generally believed that "A → B" is a common theory when you think about it carefully, it may be a coincidence, or a third variable, C, influences both variables.

As a familiar line from the recently popular "Confidence Man JP" goes, "What you see is not necessarily the only truth. What is true and what is a lie."

I think these words will continue to be important in the future.

In the Internet society, we are inundated with a lot of information, but I think this book is a good one to cultivate the ability to find the information one needs among them and to be flexible in dealing with apologetic or hidden information. Although the title of the book has the word "economy" in it, I would like people to read it regardless of their faculties.
