アメリカのIT大手Amazon（アマゾン）が家庭用ロボット掃除機「ルンバ」を発売するiRobot社を17億ドル（約2300億円）で買収すると発表しました。
このニュースについて日本のあるメディアは「Amazonが家電販売を強化するため」と報道しました。実際にはこの買収、そんなレベルの話ではありません。もっと深い意図があるはずの戦略と考えられまの一角の
そしてAmazonが次に狙っているのが一般家庭のDX化です。スマホで開錠できるAmazon Keyに交換してもらい、2018年に買収した見守りカメラのRingで家の中の安全を確認できるようにする。
家の中の家電はスマートスピーカーのアレクサ（Alexa）でコントロールしてもらう。2021年にテスト販売を始めたペットロボットのようなAstro（が家の中を歩き回り、大邸宅の場合はセキュリティをAmazon製の室内ドローンが担当するといった具合にさまざまな商品による家庭用DXラインナップを拡充しています。
このAstroというロボットはSONYのaiboのようなペット目的と、家庭で飼われている犬の古来からの役割である番犬の役割を果たすように進化する方向にあるように推察されるのですが、その開発が苦戦していたという情報が入ってきていました。
ルンバは軍事技術がルーツ
そのルンバですが、もともとは軍事技術が元になって生まれた高度なロボットです。日本人はそもそも軍事技術については関心が低いかもしれません。一般的に言えば、一般家庭に入っている民生機器よりも企業のオフィスや倉庫、工場などで使われる産業機器のほうが高い信頼性が必要とされるものですが、軍事技術はその産業機器よりもさらに一段高い信頼性が必要とされます。逆に言えば軍で使われている製品は民生用機器よりもはるかに優秀なものです。ルンバの場合は戦場での地雷探知ロボットの技術が転用されています。自律的に家の中を走り回りながら、家の地図を隅々まで自動作成する性能を持ったロボットがルンバです。そしてこれはAmazonがどうしても欲しい技術のひとつなのです。
これらの技術を応用して福祉に活用できるロボットを作れないかなぁと考えたりします。
要はアレクサなどは人とコミュニケーションが取れますし、それに加えてルンバのセンサー技術などを搭載して孤独死を未然に防げるようになれば、将来の単身世帯をうまくコントロールできるようになるかもしれません。
事実として、ヤングケアラーの問題や孤独死の問題など高齢化社会に対する策がうまく機能しておらず、深刻に考えていく必要があるのではないでしょうか？

US IT giant Amazon has announced that it will acquire iRobot, which markets the Roomba household robot vacuum cleaner, for USD 1.7 billion (approximately JPY 230 billion).
One Japanese media outlet reported this news as "Amazon's move to strengthen its home appliance sales". In reality, this acquisition is not at that level. It is considered to be a strategy that must have deeper intentions.
And Amazon's next target is to DX the average home. They will replace the Amazon Key, which can be opened with a smartphone, with the Ring, a watchful camera acquired in 2018, which will allow people to check the safety of their homes.
Appliances in the home will be controlled by Alexa, a smart speaker; Astro, a pet robot-like device that will be available for testing in 2021, will roam around the house; and in the case of large homes, security will be handled by an indoor drone made by Amazon, among many other things. The home DX line-up is being expanded with a range of products.
It is speculated that this Astro robot is on its way to evolving to serve both pet purposes like SONY's Aibo and the ancient role of the domesticated dog as a guard dog, but the information was received that the development of this robot was struggling.
Roomba has its roots in military technology
The Roomba is an advanced robot that was originally based on military technology. Japanese people may not have much interest in military technology in the first place. Generally speaking, industrial equipment used in corporate offices, warehouses, and factories require higher reliability than consumer equipment in ordinary homes, but military technology requires an even higher level of reliability than industrial equipment. Conversely, products used by the military are far superior to civilian equipment.
In the case of Roomba, the technology has been adapted from mine-sniffing robots on the battlefield. The Roomba is a robot with the ability to autonomously run around the house and automatically map every inch of the house. And this is one technology that Amazon really wants.
I sometimes wonder if we can apply these technologies to create robots that can be used for welfare.
The point is that Alexa, for example, can communicate with people, and if we can add to that the sensor technology of Roomba, for example, to prevent lonely deaths, we may be able to successfully control single-person households in the future.
As a matter of fact, measures for an aging society, such as the problems of young carers and lone deaths, are not working well and need to be taken seriously.
